Pet Surgery

         Pet surgery in San Jose

Getting surgery is a stressful experience for humans and animals alike. At the Alum Rock Animal Hospital, we can connect you with a veterinarian surgeon in San Jose who can make the entire process as calm and comforting as possible.

Why Pets Need Surgery

Cats and dogs of any age may need surgery. Sometimes, the reason may be elective, such as a routine spay or neuter. In other cases, surgery may be indicated to alleviate or eliminate issues associated with a certain health condition, including:

  • Tooth fractures and infections
  • Tumors and cancer
  • Bone fractures, tendon ruptures, and other orthopedic conditions
  • Foreign object obstructions
  • Bloat

At our veterinary clinic in San Jose, our surgical team regularly performs a wide range of procedures, including tooth extractions, tendon and ligament repairs, cesarean sections, wound repair, ophthalmological interventions, and more. We're happy to answer any questions you may have about your pet's treatment options, and will walk you through every step of the surgical experience, including pre- and post-operative care.

Why Use Anesthesia?

No matter what type of surgery we provide, our veterinarian surgeons in San Jose prefer to put your animal under general anesthesia. This is beneficial to your pet for several reasons:

  • It helps keep your pet calm and pain-free during the procedure.
  • It helps keep your animal safe by minimizing movement and bleeding.
  • It allows our staff to do our job more effectively and thoroughly.

How to Care for Your Pet Post-Surgery

At Alum Rock, we do everything in our power to make sure your pet's surgery goes well. But our care, attention, and experience go far beyond the operating room. Our San Jose veterinarian surgeons will also teach you how to care for your animal during its recovery and make sure you have all the necessary medications and

Here are a few common recommendations from our team for helping your animal recovery from pet surgery:

  • The effects of general anesthesia can take a few hours to days to fully wear off. During this time, your pet may seem a little groggy or sleepy. If these symptoms don't go away after a few days, let us know. Side effects and adverse reactions, while rare, may occur.
  • We also ask that you call us at the first sign of infection at the incision site or sites. Signs include redness, swelling, discharge, and foul odor.
  • Post-operative pain is normal. Depending on the nature of your animal's surgery, we will likely provide pain medication to help your animal be more comfortable as he/she recovers. Be sure to give this pain medication as prescribed, as well as any other medications we may recommend (including antibiotics).
  • Please limit your animal's activity few days following surgery, and keep the incision clean and dry. Do not let your animal lick, bite, or scratch the surgical site! This is to prevent bleeding, infections, and other complications.
